In Get to know The Magic Show we will give you an exclusive view in the show and it’s organisation. This time we will present you an interview with our resident DJ Zero Sanity. Have a look at it and comment if you have some more questions to him or us!

Today in The Magic Show we present you mixes of San Miquel, Zero Sanity and Noisecontrollers. The Magic Show interviewed Zero Sanity for you so you can get to know him some better.

Hi Steven, Thanks for your time. Could you tell us something about what you do in your ‘regular’ life?

Since 2008 I work at a qualified accountants company that’s active in entire Netherlands. In this period I’ve finished my study Management Science on the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. Right now I’m still working at the same company and I’m finishing my degree in Register Accountancy. The rest of my schedule is filled in with producing and playing music, sporting and gaming.

That seems like a busy life. Let’s move the subject to music! Could you tell us for how long you have been actively listening to hardstyle?

Actually, I started listening to hardstyle when the term “hardstyle” didn’t even exist yet. In 2002 I was getting more involved in the more underground harder styles. The first event that I visited was Shockers in the Amsterdam RAI. This event later turned in to InQontrol, one of the best indoor events that Q-Dance created. On this event I got introduced for the first time to techno, hardtrance and hardhouse. Especially the last conquered my hart instantly. From that moment on I got very involved in everything related to this music style, which later developed to hardstyle as we know it now.

So I guess you were one of the people that actually were there in the beginning and are still here… Do you have any favorite tracks of the early hardstyle days?

Well, I will never forget the first vinyl I bought of course; it was “DJ Zany – Be On Your Way / Ardesso”. That first record will always give you some kind of nostalgia. Besides that track there are loads of other massive tracks that I still appreciate a lot. Mostly because I share good memories with the tunes.
For instance I was playing together with Kevin Kaos on the VIPdeck of Qlimax 2009. On that night I played some of my all-time favorites like Jimmy The Sound – M.O.D.U.L.O, Marc et Claude – Loving You 2002 (DJ Isaac Remix), K-Traxx – Noise Tool (Technoboy Remix), DJ Vortex & Arpa’s Dream – Incoming (DJ Scot Project Remix) and Geal – Losing My Feeling (The Beholder & Balistic Remix).

Quiet a list of awesome classics. It’s now 2011 and you had some nice tracks on your name that were supported by big DJs like Luna, Josh & Wesz and Deepack. When was it that you started producing?

I started spinning vinyl in the end of 2002 already, but it took me way longer to start with producing tracks. Actually it was in 2006 that I started to make my first tracks. Back then I was making all sorts of music. For example in that period the jumpscene was very big. Even on the smaller events it was being played by a lot of DJs. I made then a few jumptracks that have been played live several times on a lot of occasions.

It’s nice to hear how someone’s career can lead over so many different roads. Back when you were producing other genres, did you produce under the name Zero Sanity too?

That’s a weird question to answer since there never were any official releases of these tracks. But indeed the
tracks were created as Zero Sanity. Fun fact is that Brennan Heart once finished his hardstyle set on HardBass with one of these jump tracks of me. Back then HardBass was being held in the Silverdome. At that location you can visit events as KnockOut and Project Hardcore nowadays.

That’s some huge support already back in the days. Okay, next question; which artists in the hardstyle scene have a style comparable to yours?

Hmmm, that’s a very interesting question. In the hardstyle scene we tend to place people in categories rather fast. However I can’t really label myself in any specific category. I don’t really see myself as a raw or melodic artist, so this is a question that’s hard for me to answer.
I can say that I get a lot of inspiration and musical themes out of tracks of Technoboy and Brennan Heart. From the newer artists I gain a lot of inspiration out of tracks of Scope DJ, Wildstylez and Josh & Wesz. But I don’t see my style really comparable to theirs.

Are there any artists in the scene you really like and look up to?
Yes, for sure. Since I’m active in the scene since 2002 I have seen a lot of artists come and go. But there are a few that I have supported from the first day and of which I really respect of what they have achieved. For example I’ve seen Deepack growing from resident DJ at the local “Bitte ein Beat” events to worldwide known hardstyle acts pur sang. The whole atmosphere they bring during their live performances makes me respect them really a lot.
I’ve also had respect for Brennan Heart since day one. From the early days, when they were still a resident at local Multigroove events. Till now, when both artists (Thera & Brennan Heart) are achieving impressive stuffs with their own careers.
I’ve known a lot of the newer artists from when they didn’t even make music yet. To see what they are achieving now is something that I look up to. Right now I think Wildstylez is really the bomb. The arrangement and themes in his tracks are totally my things musically seen and they are all of a very high quality.

What are your ambitions with your music? Do you see it as a hobby or do you ever want to become a professional, full-time artist?

Music has always been something important for me. It started from keyboard lessons when I was little to asking the local DJ in a club what the name was of the banging dancetrack he just played, so I could buy it the day after.
When I started to DJ myself in 2002 and started to produce in 2006 I saw music more as a hobby. Although over the years it has been becoming a more important part of my life and lifestyle and I’m investing more time in it. To develop my own style to the rest of the world means a lot of me. And of course it would be nice to be able to earn my living with music. At least it doesn’t lack ambitions here!

Can you tell us something about your new tracks and/or new releases?

Definitely! At this moment there are 2 remixes planned that I produced for other artists. First of all there will be a release of the track “Mystery – Together” on the label “Davaro Records”. It’s a happy and joyful track that will do right to summer. This track will be released on the 8th of April 2011.

Besides that I’ve remixed “W4cko & Fatal Inc – Expressions”, a jumptrack. My hardstyle remix of this record is quiet melodious too. The track isn’t so long, so for the rapid mixers between us, enjoy! The track should be released soon on Subsonic Music, a Belgium label. More info about that will be published soon.

I’m also busy with some brand-new collaborations and solo tracks. I made a quiet raw track that’s called “Tartarus” and I made a track with my buddy Kevin Kaos (and vodka & cookies) that’s called “Ghost Story”. Besides that I’m working on 2 other projects. They are called “Citadel of Sound” and “Curious Noises”. Hopefully I will release these tracks before the summer. When I have some more information about that I will make sure you will all be the first to know.

I see that you made some melodic and raw tracks. Lately there’s something going on in the scene. There’s a new ‘raw’ sound coming up. What do you think about this?

To be honest, I’m not so happy with that development. The thing that I love about hardstyle is the diversity. You can totally go any direction with it. To me being labeled as “raw” or “melodic” is only a peak limiter. I like to do whatever I want to do. Of course it is different when an artist wants to label himself specifically as one kind of producer. I think it’s rather refreshing and surprising if an artist can come out of the blue with a track that no one expects. For example a melodic artist that suddenly makes a very extreme hard and dark track, or the other way around.

That’s clear to me. Could you tell me something about how you ended up at The Magic Show?

Actually that went quiet smooth, ha-ha! I had been a few times in contact with The Magic Show when they were still a small radio show. In that period I’ve just started releasing my first tracks. Michel then contacted me if I could do a guest mix for the show. I did it, and since then we have always stayed in touch. When The Magic Show started to grow bigger they offered me several times if I wanted to become a permanent resident. I thought it was a great idea. The Magic Show crew is a group of very pleasant and crazy people there in the south of the Netherlands!

What does The Magic Show mean to you?

For me The Magic Show is a good way to promote my own music on an international level. With the big amounts of downloads that the podcast and broadcasts have you can really show your music to the entire world. Besides that it’s a great crowd, especially when all the residents are together with a beer of 1…2… or 6……

Do you have anything more to say to our listeners?

Try to drink more vodka instead of beers to ensure your creativity to hit new boundaries or do I sound too much like Charlie Sheen now?

Big respect to all you hardstyle lovers out there!

Thank you for the interview mate, I’m sure you will spoil us soon enough with a few big hits!
