interview Kamui

1 – Hi Patrick and Dominik, how are you guys, everything going well ?

Dom: We’re doing great! Everything’s well over here!

Pat: Yeah, except for Al-Qaida terror warnings – all good!

2 – Your latest release was Thrill Kill and lets say it has an interesting climax,
how do you guys come up with such unique and cool climaxes?

The mainpart wasn’t planned – the whole thing was more of an accident to be honest.
We produced the break separately from the rest of the track.
After modulating dozens of parameters of the breaksound it just ended up sounding like a bee or something.
Some lost bassdrum parts kicked in while the preset was still wobbering.
It sounded kinda weird so we decided to just leave it like that.

3 – Where do you know each other from, we know that you live in the same city,
is that just a coincidence or did you know each other before you guys began making music?

We found each other online at a musicplatform called myownmusic.
Pat was quite successful on there so I asked him to remix one of my tracks.
When we found out that we live close to each other we caught up.
We realised that we had the same musical taste, the same goals in mind and
the same sense of humour so we decided to produce together.
Our skills complemented each other and it just worked out fine… That’s how the whole thing started

4 – What was the big motivation for you guys to start producing tech-trance?

It was just really big around 2004 and the elements fit into the style that we produced at that time.
The stuff was really driving and made the scene start using fresh percussions instead of just a clap and a hihat.
Unfortunately some people had to overdo it and we ended up having loads of noisy terror techtrance
on our table…

5 – Patrick has began to do solo releases, does this mean that you are beginning to split from each other?
Also Dominik, are you planning on making any solo releases as well?

Pat: No it doesn’t mean at all that we will split, I’m just using a different channel for releases on top of the Kamui productions.
A Kamui song is always a 50/50 effort between Dom and I.
And after six years of working in a team and only in a team you’re kind of starting
to watch out for new challenges to keep the eager mind happy

I’ve just produced a single, too, I haven’t decided what to do with it yet though.
For the next time I’ll dedicate my free time to sounddesign, my first priority however is still Kamui.

6 – We also know that you guys started to do podcasts,
what was the reason behind it and can you give us a little detail about your podcasts?

Well, everybody does it. Podcasts are a good way to spread your sound.
Back in the days we had a lot of promotional- or radio sets that just never found their way
to the audience and were just made for one single occassion.
This way we can share up-to-date sets with all different kinds of people.
The podcasts can be downloaded here: http://onaflower.com/podcast/kamui.xml a new one will follow soon,
so make sure you check back regularly

7 – Is there a chance we will see you guys producing hard trance tunes like you did back in the Virus Inc days ?

No, not really. The time is over and it would be kinda sad if we had to recreate tracks from the past.
The stuff was perfect back then, we rather focus on exploring new territories than travelling back in time.

8 – What are you two doing when not producing music or playing at gigs ?

We’re both students, I study law and Dom’s studying the field of international business.
Besides that we don’t have any other exciting hobbies.
To be honest, there isn’t really the time for much more.

9 – Have you guys ever considered doing an album or a world tour?

Dom: We’re not considering producing an album at this point in time.
Music is moving fast and it takes quite a while to produce a proper album with good tracks.
So when you finally release it, it might not even be up to date.
We prefer picking up 2-3 cool elements from today’s tracks and producing a track out of that.

Pat: Albums are overrated imo, especially when you’re not Tiesto, Armin etc.,
where an accompanying ‘album tour’ is a big enough selling point.
Usually there’s not more than 5 good tracks out of 12 anyway and it’s definitely not paying off in terms
of sales. So it’s either to fulfil your artistic needs or it’s just a waste of tracks and invested time.

10 – Some of your older tracks like Drop Shot are still popular tunes, what makes your music so addicting ?

To say the thruth, Drop Shot was one of the tracks that we didn’t really like at start,
because we felt like we recreated Ghosts without any cool elements.
We were quite surprised when we realised that it got such good reactions.
In general we try to produce tracks that stand out of typical sets of a genre,
tracks that you might listen to twice when you hear them for the first time.
I guess this is the reason why people might be enjoying our productions for a longer time,
because there are few comparable tunes out there.

11 – Whats the story behind this picture ?

Pat: Well I try to give a home to Dominik’s homosexual outbursts every now and then –
clearly out of sympathy – and I have certain mother instincts as well, as I’m 1 year older than him.

12 – How come you guys have never collaborationed with anyone,
Is there a chance we will see you collab with someone in the future?

Till date we’ve never done so, because it is quite annoying to have 3 people sitting around one computer
trying to produce one track. When we work together we form a symbiosis.
We know where we wanna go and we know how we get there. We have tried collaborating some times,
but things just went nowhere…

13 – Thanks for the interview, that was it! Just one more question:
are there any upcoming releases you can say stuff about or any gigs we should know ?

Yes, we’ve got something finished. We’ll let you know when the everything is sorted out and wrapped up!
Information about gigs can be found on our website (http://www.kamui-music.com), our myspace (myspace.com/kamuimusic)
and our facebook http://www.facebook.com/pages/Kamui/20183115078).
